Large folding knives

Examples & characteristics of a large folding knife

Large folding knives, also known as folders, are simply those knives that are bigger than a pocket knife but can still be folded when not used. Although pocket knives are smaller and easier to conceal, these knives can also be kept in belt pouches, backpacks, tackle boxes and the like.

Examples of these famous collectible knives are balisongs or butterfly knives, switchblades, tactical folding knives or just about any knife that can be folded and used either for combat or survival.

Most of these large folding knives have specific locking systems to protect the carrier from getting wounded or to make sure that they are not endangering others while they’re lying about.

Lockbacks and linerlocks are the two categories of the safety features although at times the locks themselves aren’t safe enough when folding the blade back in its handle so the person using it should be cautious at all times.

Compared to fixed blade knives, these large folding knives maybe weaker because the blades tend to fold up easily sans locks, but are convenient because the handles themselves are the blades’ scabbards.

But similar to the fixed blade variety, folders’ blades and handles are made from a wide array of materials.

Blades of these large folding knives can be made of stainless steel, titanium, and many others, while handles can be made from the exotic like shells, tusks of animals, to the more common like leather, wood, micarta (a resin that laminates materials such as cotton and fabric) and etc.

As previously stressed, large folding knives can be used for combat and/or survival. In combat, these folders are associated with several martial art techniques.

Hunters, explorers, outdoorsmen, and etc. own folders and invest in them as much because it is a very essential tool in surviving in the wild.
